Several hundred thousand pounds-worth of investment to improve cycling, walking, rail use, youth provision and waste collection have been approved by Stroud District Council (SDC). The Community Infrastructure Levy funds totalling £282,050, plus £205,000 in match funding from SDC will mean neighbourhoods all across the district will benefit. The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is a charge paid by developers of new homes to help fund the infrastructure to go with it.
Cyclists and walkers are being supported in the latest round of CIL funding allocations – Cam, Dursley and Uley Greenway, Cam and Dursley Railway Station, Cainscross segregated cycleway, Stroud to Nailsworth cycle and walking route, and Frampton cycle path were all approved for investment by SDC’s Strategy and Resources Committee.
“As Europe’s first carbon neutral council, we are committed to making the whole district carbon neutral by 2030, and improving provision for cyclists, walkers and rail users is key to taking polluting vehicles off the roads,” said Council Leader Doina Cornell. “The environment is one of our five key priorities by helping communities minimise carbon footprint and continuing to improve recycling rates, so working with our officers, we have selected schemes which bring the most change to our communities and the environment.”
The committee met on Thursday, December 10 and considered and approved the CIL spending allocation recommendations from the Environment Committee.
The Cam & Dursley Greenway - Design Phase (GCC Highways) The Greenway cycle and pedestrian route largely utilises the disused railway line between Dursley and Cam, linking the two settlements to the railway station. This bid will fund design work helping to plan for construction phases particularly that of the central 'missing link'.
Cam & Dursley Rail Station Enhancements - Car Parking & Cycle Racks (GCC Highways) This station is a key commuter Hub with priority need for improvements.
